David Packard and Bill Hewlett in front of the Addison Street garage in downtown Palo Alto, where it all started (now a historical landmark proclaimed as "The Birthplace of Silicon Valley"). They were profitable every year without outside funding. During WWII, David Packard paid himself the same salary as Bill Hewlett's Army salary. While Packard served in the Nixon Administration, he gave up all gains on HP stock ($20 million). Both created multi-billion dollar foundations to give back to society.
